Christo

Christo was a male chimp of about 17 years of age. He was rescued in 1993, as an infant. His former owner, a local business man, had kept him at his welding workshop in Freetown. Christo was trained to pump air to the furnace to melt iron or metal. The owner was arrested by the help of ECOMOG personnel and the chimp was confiscated. It is unfortunate that in Sierra Leone some think that chimps can be trained to work as slaves.

Christo was one of the smartest chimps at the sanctuary. He was always showing his skills making tools and he was also able to drive nails using stones. He always reached forthe fallen fruits that remained between the electrical wire and the ground using sticks of different sizes.

In March of 2007 Mr. Christo passed away. Our pal will be greatly missed.

Communication: because chimps live in complex family groups, they use a wide range of auditory, visual and tactile signals adapted both for distant and close communication. Chimpanzees have been called the noisiest of all African animals! With loud calls, they can wander far within their territory and still stay in contact with community members.
